Brett Rollinson Takes Out A Grade

21/11/2009

Report by Rob Monk (mostly)

A grade comprised a fairly big group of riders.  Things began slowly.  The first attack came from Callan Barker.  The bunch chased him down with no urgency.  The next attack came from Matt Malacarne up the main hill.  He was chased down by Paul Yeatman who powered over the top of the smaller hill.  This got the two off the front for about two laps before they were caught at around the 30 minute mark.  Brett Rollinson and Scott Keeble swapped places with Callan as they attacked up the main hill at about the same time they caught Barker and Yeatman.  Yeatman glued himself to third wheel in the break and the three lasted one or two laps before being caught on the main hill.

Apparently A grade was going so slow that the B graders nearly caught them on lap 1, 2, 3 and 4. At one point the D graders were passed at the base of the hill and only got shed at the top.

In the sprint Shane Stiles led them out from the 1km mark and blew himself up totally. The sprint was pretty close with track star Brett Rollinson (nice to see someone who did some work winning) giving some stick to the rest. Matty went pretty quick, and took second. Scott Keeble did well to get third while Thommo never got out of the seat and took forth. Stiles rolled in for fifth. Kane walker didn’t get his heart rate over resting and finished 2nd last as Yeatman’s legs quit on him when the bell rang and he rolled through 500m down.

B grade saw a reshuffle with Rob Monk and Simon Baxter visiting from A grade.  Due to this their plan was to to smash the regular B graders to pieces. There was only one problem with that plan. They did not have the form! Monk tried hard to dish out some hurt, taking off at the start finish line on laps 5 and 6 and working hard up the hill. He had Tim Lee in trouble once and Matt Kennelly off the back another time but mostly he just completely stuffed himself. Baxter took things easy.  Jimmy Lalor was the strongest and is riding in very good form.  In the sprint Tim Lee made an early move around the back straight. Monk decided to chase Lee down and took off when Lee sat up.  This resulted in Monk becoming the lead out man.  Disastrous for him good for the others.  Lalor and Kennelly were very fast in the sprint. They outclassed Baxter who just held off the improving Jason Dastey. Monk rolled in exhausted in fifth and Tim Lee cruised by sometime later. Monk and Baxter are looking to dish out some punishment in C grade next week.

C Grade all stayed together despite the efforts of Dave Baillie who made them work up the hill each time. This had Karen Munro off the back a couple of times. Neil Walker was encouraging the blokes to work together to drop her completely but luckily for Karen there were some gentlemen like Ross Henry and Dave Baillie who waited for her. Charlie Davine sat in the whole race pretending he didn’t really know what he was doing until the sprint when he gave the old blokes a fearful flogging. Davine first and up to B grade next week. Henry second and Walker third.

D Grade comprised Greg Horbowicz, Ken Whittaker and Cyrus Monk.  Horbowicz was feeling frisky and attacked Cy and Ken 6 times on lap one and was dropped by lap 3 when cooked legs saw him throw in the towel. From that moment on Ken worked hard to shake Cy from his back wheel. Cy was having none of that. Ken still had enough to take the sprint and his third win in a row. Ken and Cy look set for inclusion in next week’s C grade event.
